Aromatherapy uses essential oils from plants to heal, alleviate pain, and regulate mood. An essential oil is a highly concentrated plant extract, distilled from a single botanical source like leaves, bark, roots, seeds, resins, and flowers. Pure plant essential oils have nothing added to them and nothing taken away, and can be sedative or stimulating, analgesic or antispasmodic. Most are antibacterial, as well.
In aromatherapy massage, essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil like sweet almond or grapeseed oil. Your therapist will use up to five essential oils with a single or combination of carrier oils, and chooses all oils based on the climate and season.
